Bodybuilder Frank DeFeo Interviewed by Ben Tatar of CriticalBench.com - September 2008

CRITICAL BENCH: Critical Bench is here with the super strong bodybuilding superstar, Frank Defeo aka "Frank The Tank!" Frank, introduce yourself to Critical Bench!

Hi, my name is Frank DeFeo aka "Frank The Tank". I am 24 years old and have been into bodybuilding, power lifting and personal training for 11 years. I was introduced to "the gym" when I was 14 years old, which now I call "my home".

You might look at me and think, "God he must have only been into lifting his whole life!" Actually, I was into fishing and hunting before my bodybuilding career started. And yes, I'm a damn good sportsman! Wouldn't you think so?

The day I stepped foot in the gym I knew that this was something I wanted to not only do but something I would become. I was all about it. I started out power lifting, which took me into bodybuilding. I worked out hard every day and every night. Not long after, I had entered my first competition on July 28th 1999. And yes, I placed first! Placing 1st in the competition gave me goals and ambitions to hit the gym harder and harder until each goal was reached. I solely body build for no one else but myself.

CRITICAL BENCH: You have had quite the bodybuilding journey so far! What has been your favorite moment? What has been the craziest moment?

My favorite moment is a body building contest in L.A when I first got noticed.

My craziest moment is when I saw my face on the front cover of Men's Workout.

CRITICAL BENCH: Frank, what gym do you train at and what is it like?

I train and personal train at world gym in South Jersey. It's a hardcore atmosphere!

CRITICAL BENCH: For everyone reading this, Frank is on the verge of becoming 300lbs of shredded muscle and not one of those 185lbs muscular bodybuilders that you often see out there! Very nice Frank! Frank, what do you enjoy doing away from bodybuilding?

I enjoy fishing, hunting and a lot of outdoor activities.

CRITICAL BENCH: What is your favorite exercise and what is your least favorite?

My favorite exercise is sleeping and I dread abs.

CRITICAL BENCH: What motivates you to be the best you can be?

My huge fan base and my bitching wife.

CRITICAL BENCH: What is your favorite thing about yourself?

That I am an all round guy.

CRITICAL BENCH: What is your advice for the younger bodybuilder who looks up to you?

Life is a challenge. People shouldn't make up excuses for things they haven't done or things they want to do, but realize what they want to accomplish, get up and do it, for no one else but YOU! Don't say it, but do it. And when you do it, become it! It's the only way in life. Remember, life is only what you make it, so treat it like a game, and be CHALLENGED, so roll that dice, the next move is YOURS!

CRITICAL BENCH: How do you want to be remembered?

That I was a good guy, a great power lifter, bodybuilder, brother, son, husband and a Muscle God!!

CRITICAL BENCH: In closing who would you like to thank?

I would like to thank Critical Bench for giving me this opportunity, as well as my family, friends and most of all my fans! I am what I am because of them!

P.S. Be sure to check out my website: www.frankdefeo.com

To quote "George Halbert"...

About 4-5 years ago I was training close-grip low pin presses overhead against the rack with Arnold Classic winner Mike Francois. The bar was loaded to 315 which I proceeded to do one. Mike struggled to do one then proceeded to blast out about 8 more reps and I swear-every rep he did seemed to get easier and his muscles blew up like a balloon right in front of my eyes. I then loaded the bar to 350 and did one rep and mike tried and failed to do one. Why? My muscles were trained to lift maximal effort lifts and his muscles were trained to grow maximal size. Body builders train for the pump, power lifters train for maximum lifts. Most of my training is singles or speed work neither of which builds much muscle size but both build a great deal of strength".

To quote " Mike Witmer"

"I was in world's gym on Saturday and I had just finished 3 board presses, and was on to some close grip benches. There were some pro bodybuilders in there and he was a guest poser at the gym. He was going to guest pose for a bodybuilding show in FT. Myers. He had just received his pro card, wasn't a big name yet. But he was FREAKIN HUGE! He kept watching me and looking at me. He was training chest and tris. He walked up to me and said, "hey big man, can I do some close grips with ya?" I said sure! We went 225 for 8. Then I hit 315 for 5, he did it for 8. We then did 365, I did 5, he did 8. We then went 405, I hit 3, and he did 5. We then went 455. I did 3 easy reps and he barley did 1 and couldn't get rep number 2 off of his chest! It's the way they train! Bodybuilders don't have the same strength that powerlifters have".

You see, power lifters have to train differently than bodybuilders and all their training is geared towards a 1 rep max. Therefore, according to Lou Simmons, the Soviets, Russians, etc, etc, the main focus of the power lifter is to train the central nervous system, as bodybuilders put their priority on muscle hypertrophy, therefore the bodybuilder won't have the MAXIMUM EFFORT strength for a single that the top power lifter would have. Power lifters also use different techniques in the bench press and they have a purpose to get stronger throughout the range of motion. Power lifters who train the bench are using bands, boards, speed days, maximum effort days, etc. etc and these techniques allow the power lifter to get stronger for a 1 max rep. The power lifter also has more tendon strength (reps 1-3) than the bodybuilder since the bodybuilder is soo focused on hypertrophy and aesthetic appearance. As the bodybuilder might develop amazing slow twitch fibers, hypertrophy and the sarcoplasmic muscle fiber, they really need to train like the top RAW benching power lifters to be one of them, have their explosive power, tendon strength or even compete among them, which would take years for the top bodybuilders to do.

Yes Ronnie Coleman, etc, etc, trains through Diesel, but still he nor Jackson, etc, train to be the strongest of the strong...If they were to, you would discover that their appearance would go down dramatically! It's give to gain, bro, we have to make sacrifices to achieve different goals.... So if you want to see bodybuilders SUCCEED, as far as functional strength is concerned... The question shouldn't be "Who is the strongest for 1 rep", but who is the strongest for 10 reps... And then we would see a lot more bodybuilders doing strength shows. Else, they would be entering the IPF world bench championship, the WORLDS STRONGEST MAN, etc and they would be getting killed in this day.

Top Bodybuilders and Raw Bench Pressing

Many people have been asking me about how a Pro Bodybuilder would do in a RAW bench contest against the strongest power lifters in the world.. Names that come up include Greg Kovaks, Marcus Ruhl and Ronnie Coleman. I can see exactly why this question comes up. We have seen Ronnie Coleman dumbbell benching 200lbs for 10 easy reps and have heard about Ronnie benching 225 for 75 reps, which equals a 731 1 rep max in theory. As we know, theory doesn't always equal truth since we know that doing 225 for a load of reps involves mostly slow twitch fibers and doing 731 for 1 would include fast twitch fibers, and finally we know that slow twitch and fast twitch fibers work in opposite directions.

Then we hear Greg Kovaks at 410lbs incline bench pressing 700+ pounds. Then finally, we have Isaac Nessar, the man with the biggest muscular chest, measuring 74 1/2 inches claiming that he has benched 825. The bottom line is that with all these amazing claims the same question always enters our minds "How would these monster bodybuilders do against the strongest RAW benchers of the world and why aren't these mastodons in bodybuilding not hitting the world records in RAW bench competitions or even competing among even the powerlifters who are almost, but not quite at the top"?

Well, to answer the question, on external levels, many top lifters have constantly seen bodybuilders that can hit 505 for almost and more than 10 reps on the bench press, and then they get smashed by 600 for 1! See, Strength is different than rep power; bodybuilders don't have the Central Nervous System (CNS) training that power lifters have. My 750 bencher friend, Mike Witmer, saw a guy at world gym, that could sling 405 around for 10 easy warm up reps, but he couldn't bench 550! Bodybuilders have a certain make up of muscle that allows them to genetically get huge, and rep big weight, but central nervous system can pop a bigger one rep max! On the other hand, maybe the top RAW benchers in power lifting couldn't rep 405 as many times as the strongest bodybuilders, but again they have a higher 1 rep max.

Trivia Tidbit Of The Day: Part 245 -- Media Defeatism On Iraq.

Bad News Bears MAKING The News-

We all know the media are extraordinarily biased. Sometimes I wonder if the emergence of blogs and talk radio and other alternative forms of media have actually made the bias worse in some ways. The establishment types feel they are just balancing the "right wing propaganda" out there with increasingly ridiculous news coverage. Meanwhile, the big, lefty, establishment guys continue to lose market share.

Could it be that people are sick of the gloom and doom defeatism, the hand-wringing, and the second-guessing?

As we found earlier this year, few stories (just five in two m

Unless you’ve been living on an island these past few years, you know how the pro body-building scene operates. Year after year the guys just keep getting bigger, harder, and just downright more freaky. We assure you it’s not from any radical new training system either.

The barbells and dumbbells still weigh the same, and sets and reps form the basis of workout programs. What has changed over the years are the “little extras” that pro bodybuilders are putting into their bodies. Hopefully we don’t need to spell it out for you. Modern bodybuilding is based as much on pharmacology as it is on training. No doubt many readers may be tempted to dive straight into the murky world of bodybuilding drugs.

We caution against this, however. Meeting some guy named Bruno in a back alley carries a number of health hazards. At the very least, you may be wasting your hard-earned money on bogus drugs. You also run the risk of being set up by the DEA. Those and most other bodybuilding drugs are illegal, in case you didn’t know.

Synergy is the Key to maximum mass! The Super Bodybuilder Stack was created to maximize muscle gains in the same manner

as hard core illegal compounds without the same health and legal risks. To accomplish this the Super Bodybuilder Stack contains three products that when taken together produce what’s called a synergistic effect. Synergy is when two or more drugs magnify the others effects. Instead of 2+2=4 we get 2+2=6, 8,or any higher number.
By themselves, the products in the Super bodybuilder Stack will build you a great physique, but when all three are combined the results are out of this world. We’re talking pounds of striated muscle in mere weeks. You’ll also be lifting powerlifter-sized weights while having your body fat down in the single-digit.

Favorite Bodypart: Arms, Shoulders
Favorite Exercise: Squats, while at the beginning I hated him

I discovered bodybuilding by chance and very late in my life... After I had quit rugby, I felt the need to exercise. A friend of mine had just subscribed a gym membership. He asked me to go there with him and I did. I didn't quite like the idea to go to a gym. However that was my first time in a gym. I was 33 years old. My weight was 85 kilos (187 lbs.) and my height was 183 cm ( 6 feet). Believe me, I have never been really skinny. I must admit I was not very much impressed by the gym. I thought it was stupid to struggle with a barbell and two 10-kilo ( 22 lbs .) plates on the sides.
I am honest. I kept on for several months. Eventually, I bought a gym-set to work out in my basement. Lonesome and in my basement - that was the very starting of my career as a bodybuilder. I had no knowledge. I didn't read bodybuilding magazines. I had been training insanely for three years. I had not been following any special training program. My only goal was to acquire a noticeable size.

Later on I started to read bodybuilding magazines and got interested into any bodybuilding champion. I subscribed to a brand new gym in Dijon. It was the Athletic Gym and the owner was Jacky Biondi. The ambiance and the people were wonderful. There I started to work out hard and to diet properly.

One year later, Jacky began to talk me into entering for a regional competition. The idea had never crossed my mind before that day! He pressured me so much that he got me persuaded. So I got it started! Thanks to his advice I won my first competition at Macon in 1994. I was 37 years old! My height was always 183 cm ( 6 feet ) but now my weight was 83 kilos ( 183 lbs .)! Today I can barely realize what I was able to do and the results I got.

Lee Priest

Name: Lee Andrew Priest McCutcheon
Born: July 6, 1972, Newcastle, Australia
Height: 5'4"
Off Season Weight: 230 Competition Weight: 203

Lee Priest was born to a "regular working-class family," as he puts it, and as he reached his teenage years, he began to dabble in rugby and karate. His grandfather, a former army wrestler, enrolled young Lee in the local police force's boys gymnastics club. The youngster had a habit of arriving before the gymnastics class started and -- being the adventurous lad he was -- working out with weights that were strewn around the secluded corner of the gym. This introduction to barbells and dumbbells occurred when Lee was 13.

Though he sported a lean and lithe physique that could never be described as skinny when he started, after only eight months of weight training, he had packed on impressive muscle size. In 1986, at the age of 14, he entered and won three local junior bodybuilding shows in quick succession against competitors three and four years older. Being onstage felt natural to him from the very first contest, and with that mind-set, he decided to "take this bodybuilding thing as far as I could." Initially, his family was a little wary of young Lee getting involved in the "weird" sport of bodybuilding, but they very quickly became supportive and have remained so ever since.

A devoted reader of Flex and Muscle & Fitness, the teenager became enamored with the Austrian Oak. "Arnold became my idol," he says. As he progressed, Lee was increasingly drawn toward the freaky look, as embodied by pros like Tom Platz and Eddie Robinson. Lee's early 1994 resemblance to Platz, courtesy of his dyed blond hair, is dismissed as a coincidence, and the youngster has now reverted to his natural brown hue. In 1989, at the tender age of 17, Priest won the Mr. Australia title, the major one, not the teen division, and successfully defended it in 1990 and 1991. Too big for Australia, Priest jumped the island continent and took fourth in the lightweight division of the 1990 IFBB World Championships in Malaysia. The tiny terror then entered the 1991 World Championships in Poland as one of the precontest favorites, but in a major controversy, he failed the contest's drug test even though he had tested clean (twice!) prior to leaving Australia. Of that incident, Lee says candidly, "If I was on gear (drugs), I wouldn't have been in the lightweight (154-pound) class. I would have been at least 20 pounds heavier."

After the Polish debacle, Priest felt it was time to strut his stuff among the pose-for-pay brigade. He applied for his pro status with IFBB Pro Division Director Wayne DeMilia, but DeMilia turned down the 20-year-old's request, saying he was too young and not yet good enough to turn pro.

The Priest of pump thus became suspended in a kind of career limbo in 1992. In April 1993, hungry for competition, he journeyed to the States and entered the Niagara Falls open amateur contest, which is staged in conjunction with the annual Niagara Falls Pro Invitational.

A few days before that contest, Lee was in Gold's Gym, Venice, hitting a few shots after a workout when he was spotted by NPC President Jim Manion. Perusing the 181 cut pounds distributed on Lee's 5'4" frame, the canny Manion exclaimed: "You should be a pro."

After a flurry of red tape, Priest was consequently registered as an IFBB pro on the morning of the 1993 Niagara Flass Pro Invitational, and he duly made his debut with an impressive ninth-place finish. Many observers of that show said he should have placed higher, but in the slow-burn manner that personifies his character, Priest in an interview. "As long as I'm in my best shape and continue making progress, I'm content to let the placings take care of themselves," he said humbly.

On July 1, 2000 he married Cathy LeFrancois, a female bodybuilder, from whom he has since separated. Recently he was engaged to popular fitness pro Adela Garcia Friedmansky.

Dave Liberman

In my twenty plus-years of involvement in the fitness and bodybuilding industry, I have learned to appreciate the importance of mental and physical fitness. Through personal training and the promotion of drug free NPC bodybuilding and fitness contests, I have made a conscious effort to help individuals improve their mental health and physical caliber.

My goal through this site is to continue to help others by providing nutrition information, and personal training services which include hands-on training and personalized workout routines.

I hope your visit is enlightening, informative and motivating, and that you take with you a wealth of information to assist you in living a life of good mental and physical health.

I became involved with weight training at the age of 13 in order to battle a weight problem and to improve my self-esteem. After lifting weights at home, I decided to join a local YMCA. Fortunately this particular YMCA had an extensive gym with a variety of free weights and machines.

In 1983 at the age of 17, I decided it was time to try competing, and took home my first bodybuilding trophy, and placed fourth in the NPC Teenage Ohio North District. For the following 10 years I competed successfully in a multitude of bodybuilding contests.

With my success on the bodybuilding stage I received a contract with Cybergenics, a New Jersey based supplement company. I was a spokes person for them for three years, and was so well received I was given the responsibility of representing the company by handling all their military accounts. This gave me the unique opportunity to make a living at what I love to do, and travel the world in the process.

Some of the places I made appearances at were Japan, Okinawa, Korea, Germany, Saudi Arabia and all over the US including Alaska.

After a bit of traveling, I felt the need to come back to the Cleveland, OH area and start my personal training and nutritional services. The majority of my business is fueled by everyday people whose main desire is to lose weight, tone up and improve their overall health and fitness.

I am still very involved with the bodybuilding and fitness community, and often find time to write and take photos for various bodybuilding and fitness publications. In addition, I am a promoter of NPC bodybuilding and fitness events in the Cleveland area, and donate a good portion of the proceeds to the American Cancer Society.

I was born on 4th of April 1970 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I am the youngest in a family of 10. Since a kid, I was always focused, determined, and athletic. I played all kinds of games in school.

I started bodybuilding at the age of 18 when I was in my high school track and field team. My body responded well and put on some 20 lbs in just 6 weeks of training. I was hooked and amazed by how fast my body responded and decided to become a bodybuilder instead. I have been training ever since.

After only 6 months of training, I entered my first bodybuilding competition and won the “junior” category. I was in quite a good condition considering that I did not know much about training and nutrition at that time.

A few months later in August 1990, I went to school in Colorado State University in America. When I was in school, I learned a lot about bodybuilding. I started reading bodybuilding books and magazines about training and nutrition. I was only a recreational bodybuilder then, and went to a few local NPC competitions and saw a few pros as the guest posers. I never knew I had the genetics to become a pro until I saw them posed in person that night. I told myself I wanted to be a pro bodybuilder and make bodybuilding as my career.

I knew I had a long way to go before I could turn pro, so after I graduated with a Master’s degree in Human Nutrition in 1995, I came back to my native country, Malaysia and started to compete again. I wanted to be the best in Asia before setting foot in America again to earn my pro card. During that period when I was in Malaysia competing from 1995-1999, I also worked as a quality controller in a local food company.

In 4 years, I won most of the competitions in Asia including the prestigious IFBB Mr.Asia title in 1999. With the Mr.Asia title under my belt, I thought it was time to go back to America in 2000 to further my bodybuilding career (earn for an IFBB pro card).

Within 2 years after setting foot again in USA for the second time, I became a professional bodybuilder. This meant a lot to me as I was one of the very first Asians to turn pro in the IFBB. During that time, I was a personal trainer in New York City.

I competed a few times in pro competitions and did decently well before I decided to go back to Malaysia in March 2005 to venture into business. I opened my new fitness center in Kuala Lumpur on 1st of September 2005. Opening a new gym is one way I can educate and pass on my knowledge of what I have learned from my 15 years experience in the bodybuilding and fitness industry, Master’s of Science in Human Nutrition , and 4 years as a competitive bodybuilder in America.

Eventhough I am an entrepreneur now, I still have fire in me to compete professionally. I am far from reaching my full potential as a competitive bodybuilder. I know I have what it takes to be one of the best bodybuilders in the world.

There were many ups and downs in my bodybuilding career but I kept on believing in myself and refused to give up to get to where I am today. I am grateful that I can make a living doing what I love, BODYBUILDING.

Cheers and God bless!

Rachel McLish Ms Olympia 1980, 1982

Name: Rachel McLish
Name on the birth record: Raquel Livia Elizondo
Born: June 21, 1955, Harlingen, Texas

Rachel McLish is a true queen of women's bodybuilding, the lady who literally put the sport on the map. Rachel defined bodybuilding, but she was bigger than the whole sport. She pushed the envelope as to what constituted the ultimate expression of beauty. It was Rachel's exquisite example that allowed the culture to move beyond the vulnerability of Marilyn Monroe and toward the kick-ass era of Lucy Lawless. "Empowerment" was only a word until Rachel McLish put the soul into it. Beauty and sensuality count for a lot, but Rachel's life also touches the heart in unexpected and deep ways. An architect of the future, she is also very much part of a better day the like of which we'll not see again.
Tenacity, discipline, commitment, dignity and integrity have made Rachel McLish an icon for female athletes of all types, not just bodybuilders.

She married John P. McLish on Feb. 3 1979. Rachel was 23 and John was 26 on their wedding date.

Married now to film producer Ron Samuels. They raise Doberman dogs. They have a doberman named Princess Olympia the First. Also had two Arabian horses.

Samir Bannout - Mr. Olympia - 1983

Name: Samir Bannout
Born: Nov 7, 1955, Beirut, Lebanon
Nickname: The Lion of Lebanon.

Three months before Christmas 1983, Samir Bannout flexed his “decorated” lumbar region in Munich, West Germany, for the IFBB Mr. Olympia judges. Since then, the high definition found in a muscular lower back has been called a “Christmas tree”. Known as the “Lion of Lebanon” because of his birthplace (Beirut), Samir roared into America in 1974 and settled first in Detroit. In that city, he was crowned 1978 Mr. Michigan. In 1979, he won the Best in the World event and the light-heavyweight division of the IFBB World Amateur Champhips. The latter win bequeathed him an IFBB pro card, and he made his debut (also in 1979) at the Canada Pro Cup, by which time he had moved to Venice, California. Bannout’s IFBB pro career spanned 53 contests; his 11 attempts at the IFBB Mr. Olympia are a record among those who have won the title – as he did in 1983. His last win was the 1990 IFBB Pittsburgh Pro Invitational, and the final sighting of Samir in contest mode was at the 1996 IFBB Masters Olympia where he finished in sixth place. His pro career had endured for 17 years. The Lion always was and still is renowned as one of bodybuilding’s more entertaining characters. His ability to mix quotes with poses never left the industry’s writers disappointed. In 1997 Samir married Randa, a young lady from Lebanon. Today, Samir lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two children and pursues several business interests, including the marketing of a supplement company.

Dorian was raised in Hurley, in rural Staffordshire, just outside of Birmingham, England. Dorian grew up on a farm, or 'small holdings', as they call it in England. His mother was a horse riding instructor. Dorian has a sister named Lisa (five years younger) who is a teacher, and buys and sells horses, and competes on horses (which she qualified once for the National Championships in England). At the age of 13, Dorian lost his father (from a heart attack, at 42 years old). Growing up, Dorian was not involved in any sports. He moved back to the city of Birmingham from the farm at age 14 with his mother and sister after his mother met another man (who also died before they married).

After this second tragedy, his mom went back to the country side, but Dorian stayed in the city (at 16 years old). He was in a gang in which he was considered a skin head, with a shaven head, steel toed boots; a cultural statement, not a racist statement. Dorian's music scene during the early years was the Clash, the Sex Pistols, PIL, etc. and on the weekends, he would go to the clubs to hang out. Dorian has lots of interesting job to pay the bills, including working in a slaughterhouse. Dorian was arrested at age 19, after a riot in which he was swept up by the police. Because of the arrest, and because England recognizes youth as being up to the age of 21, he was sentenced to six months at Whatton Youth Detention Center.
It was in here that Dorian started powerlifting and was noticed by a guard that he was very strong, and where Dorian got his new direction in life.

He started training at a gym, a small dark gym in the cellar, and at age 21, competed in his first contest. In 1987, Dorian tore a muscle in his hip, had an operation and took a year off. In 1987, one year after he has won the British Championships Heavyweight Division, Dorian purchased Temple Gym, located in England.

He currently lives in Walmley. Sutton Coldfield, England with his wife Debbie and his son Lewis. Debbie and Dorian were married on November 2, 1991.
Retired from bodybuilding in 1998. Dorian is considered the #1 bodybuilder of the 1990's winning six Mr. Olympias before retiring from bodybuilding in 1998.

Dorian has a few nicknames, including the famous 'Shadow'. He is also called the 'British Bulldog', and the 'Beast of Britain'. His nickname 'Shadow' comes because Dorian would come to the shows, win the shows, then disappear back into his own world, them come back, compete, win, and disappear again. The Shadow comes and goes. This nickname came from Peter McGough, currently the editor of Flex Magazine, but was working for a British publication in 1988.

Dorian likes wildlife and has been on several safaris. Dorian would like to work with kids, and combine that with work with wildlife once he is retired, perhaps a shelter with animals with a facility with kids. At home, the family has two boxer dogs names Conan and Samson. In 1998, Dorian joined a company called Chemical Warefare (now Chemical Nutrition), and in 1999, launched his own line of supplements called 'Dorian Yates Approved'.

Dexter Jackson - Mr. Olympia 2008

Nickname: The Blade
Born: November 25, 1969, Jacksonville, Florida
Height: 5'6"
Contest Weight: (2008) 220 lbs | Off Season Weight: 245-255 lbs

Dexter "The Blade" Jackson is an IFBB professional bodybuilder and the 2008 Mr. Olympia bodybuilding champion. He has one of the most remarkable physiques the bodybuilding world has ever seen. He's managed to pack an insane amount of shredded mass onto his relatively small frame. Dexter's first NPC competition was the NPC Southern States Championship of 1992, where he took 3rd. He first competed in the Arnold Classic, Night of Champions, and Mr. Olympia contests in 1999, placing 7th, 3rd, and 9th, respectively. At the 2007 Mr. Olympia, Jackson placed 3rd, but many critics said he would not likely place any higher. On September 27, 2008, however, he defeated the reigning two-time Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler to become the twelfth man to win that title, and only the second to have won it and the Arnold Classic title in the same year. Dexter has been featured in many fitness and bodybuilding articles, including being pictured on the cover of Muscular Development magazine. He currently lives in Jacksonville, Florida.

Name: Yumon Eaton
Born: December 31, 1986
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 205

I have always been interested in sports, football especially. As a child I was always too small and fragile to play though. My mother feared that I would get hurt. When I got in high school and I was able to make a few decisions on my own, however, I decided to join the football team.

After my first year I was told by my coach that he would be moving me from cornerback to running back. I knew that I would need to gain some weight if I were to play running back at the varsity level, since I only weighed about 115lbs. I tried eating and various weight gaining plans, but nothing seemed to work. I have always had a super-fast metabolism, so eating alone wasn't going to get it. I knew what I needed to do, so I turned to weight training.

Training:

Monday - Chest & Triceps
Tuesday - Back & Biceps
Wed - Off
Thursday - Shoulders & Traps
Friday - Legs

Ken 'Flex' Wheeler

Name: Ken (Kenneth) Wheeler
Born: August 23, 1965, Fresno, California
Height: 5'9"
Off Season Weight: 247 Competition Weight: 232

Flex Wheeler began training as a teenager, initially with martial arts in mind. However his natural development persuaded him to pursue bodybuilding. Despite this he is on record as regarding himself as a "martial artist first, a bodybuilder second." It also accounts for his remarkable flexibility in a physique so large. Even so, he has been described by Arnold Schwarzenegger as one of the greatest bodybuilders he ever saw.

Markus Ruhl

Name: Markus Ruhl
Born: February 22, 1972, Germany
Height: 5'11
Off Season Weight: 330 Competition Weight: 285

I started working out at the age of nineteen weighing in at 140 lbs without being ambitious with regard to a professional career. After four years of consistent and intense workouts I felt the decision to participate in the Newcomer Championship 1994 in Hessen, Germany. Unfortunately I hurt my shoulder, so that I was unable to compete. Accordingly I had to delay my first competition.

In 1995 after having recovered from my shoulder injury, I competed in the Bachgau Cup in Babenhausen weighing in at 243 lbs and won the heavyweight and overall title. One week later I received 2nd place at the Grosser Preis von Hessen. In 1997 after 7 years of hard workouts, I won the Hessen Championships and one week later also the German Nationals.

Being the first german bodybuilder ever, who received his pro card immediately after his victory at the Nationals, I competed in the German Pro Grand Prix in Offenbach, Germany. Although I was able again to make improvements in terms of my overall physique, I could literally see that I still lacked in refinement and muscle maturity in comparison to the world's leading men. It was crystal clear, that in addition to the nessecary improvements I would have to make regarding refinement and muscle maturity, I would also need an additional 10-15 lbs of lean muscle mass in order to achieve the competitive state, that enables me to become established in the world's pro elite. Incidentially, I placed 10th, weighing in at 258 lbs.

Eddie Robinson

In my life I have been blessed as an athlete, husband, and father of two precious children, Cara & Seth.
My career as an athlete started at a young age, as a teenager I played football and boxed at the Golden Gloves in Akron Ohio. In 1982, I moved to Florida and got involved in bodybuilding and power lifting which became my true love. As a teenager I was able to accomplish winning just about every bodybuilding and powerlifting meet in the state of Florida. My career took off like a rocket in 1986 when I took a world record in the bench press at 5'8 and 220 pounds; I had pressed 575 and 610 pounds ranking me number one in the world. At that time I had channelled my strength to pursue a career in bodybuilding. Winning the Mr. Florida, Mr. America, and Mr. USA titles gave me professional recognition as one of the greatest pro bodybuilders and powerlifters in the world.

Having competed as a professional bodybuilder for twelve years I decided to retire in 2001 giving up my pro status as an IFBB pro athlete and moving on to what God has in store for me next. I have been blessed in my career accomplishing seventy-five national and international magazine covers, 226 articles & advertisements along with numerous endorsements. The highlights of my career have been working with Arnold Schwarzenegger, being featured doing a series of photos for his bodybuilding encyclopaedia along with competing in the Arnold Classic.
I was also honored to have the privilege to work with Vince & Linda McMahon endorsing ICO/PRO, and competing in the WBF, one of the highlights of my life. And last but not least Mr. Joe Weider.aka (The Master Blaster), I owe a lot to this man for taking me under his belt for the last twelve years, and for having faith in me as a pro athlete & contracting me for most of my professional career.

I am honored, and always will be for being an endorser of Muscle & Fitness, Flex, and Weider Nutrition.

The Pro's and Con's of a Huge Bodybuilder

A Huge Bodybuilder is a person who builds his muscles purposely using different techniques and whilst they can win at events just by being big, it is not the only factor that judges look out for in bodybuilding competitions. This maybe due to huge bodybuilders not having the defined muscles that judges look for in sporting events so being a huge bodybuilder does not guarantee the prize at all.

The Plus Points

There are several pluses to being a huge bodybuilder and these include having the strength to do what you want to do. Being big definitely has its advantages (scaring people is certainly one of these)! Many people have a healthy respect for bigger people which is probably why there are a lot of people who wish to be bigger than what they are. A huge bodybuilder does not have to enter contests and events to earn the respect of people. The size alone can give them a tons of respect from others. Of course, size should not matter when it comes to respect but it seems that it does when it comes to people.

However, being a huge bodybuilder will most likely earn you the prizes in some competitions at some time as well defined muscles are what usually win at these kinds of contests. Being a huge one also gives one the confidence when it comes to sports.
